Americanism Hearing Minutes

The hearing was opened at 7:01pm on Wednesday March 12, 2025 in the Elgin Public School Board Room. The Americanism Committee Members present included Lisa Welding, Ron Bode, and Luke Hinkle. Superintendent, Mr. Brockhaus was also present.
The committee reviewed Policy 604.11 Citizenship and noted that the teachers complete the tasks outlined in the policy.
Mr. Brandon Callahan, High School Social Studies Teacher, presented information on the topics covered in his classes. The topics included: 9/11 activities; structure of the U. S. Government and a breakdown of the U. S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; the importance of the Declaration of Independence; and holidays such as President’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Veteran’s Day, and Memorial Day. Brandon also takes a group of students to the Capitol Forum Day in Lincoln to work with our state Senators and other students. The 8th and 11th Graders take the Citizenship Test each year as well.
Mr. Trent Ostransky, Elementary Social Studies Teacher, presented information on the topics covered in his classes. The topics included: 9/11 activities; Columbus Day; Veterans Day; Memorial Day; Thanksgiving activities; Pearl Harbor Day and the U. S. involvement in WW II. The branches of the U. S. Government and Nebraska State Government are also discussed. Homesteading and the pioneers are also discussed along with Nebraska state activities.
Both teachers discuss current events in their classes and how the events affect our daily lives.
The Americanism Hearing was closed at 7:19pm.
