EHS Hall of Fame Inducts Jerry Mundorf

Launch the media gallery 1 playerElgin Public Schools recently released the name of the first coach to be inducted into its newly established athletic Hall of Fame. Elgin resident Jerry Mundorf received the honor as a result of his years of dedication to the athletic programs at Elgin Public Schools and in the Elgin community. Mundorf coached a variety of sports from the years of 1960-1970. During his decade of coaching, he was at the helm of many successful teams in football, basketball, track, and summer baseball.
In football Mundorf coached two undefeated football teams and experienced no losing seasons during his ten-year assignment. Though there were no state football playoffs at the time, he did coach two all-state players.
His success continued in basketball, where his teams earned three conference championships, three district championships, one state tournament appearance, and one undefeated regular season. His players also experienced no losing seasons during his nine-year tenure. Three of Mundorf’s players also garnered all-state honors.
In track he coached one state champion and two state medalists. Mundorf also fostered success in Elgin’s summer baseball programs. He coached all of the boys in town for a ten-year span. The result was a 49-game winning streak, one state championship, and two state-tournament appearances. Mundorf served as a role model for his athletes and helped many of them develop a sense of pride they still carry with them to this day.
There is no doubt that his success helped to play a role in future athletic accomplishments at EPS, as well as in the Elgin community as a whole.
